Weight gain NOT due to less exercise

Posted by Charles Waisbren on June 25, 2016 at 9:56 AM

All day long I hear patients tell me that their weight is up because "they haven't been going to the gym". My standard response is: "It's not the lack of exercise"...

Does dieting actually cause your stomach to shrink?

My wife insists that with dieting, your stomach actually shrinks.... Sorry honey, although you are almost always right about everything, in this instance, you probably are not,,,,,

Weekly weight loss expectations

Posted by Charles Waisbren on June 15, 2016 at 2:06 PM

Well, my watch is loser.... I have lost weight in my wrist... The rest of me seems about the same... How is everyone doing in their summer weight loss routine? How much weight can you expect to lose if you are behaving yourself? Experts say that it depends on your starting weight. 1-2 pounds a week is the usual. If you dramatically cut down the calories and increase your exercise, a more dramatic weekly weight loss will ensue.

Is a "good" breakfast needed for diets?

Posted by Charles Waisbren on June 12, 2016 at 10:01 AM

Does skipping breakfast cause weight gain? Nonsense! Read how this notion started.... (breakfast product promoters)..I am on day 7 of the "Waisbren Diet". Weigh in tomorrow. No breakfast for me the last 7 days..No lots of things throughout the remaining 24 hours.

Dieting? How often should you weigh yourself?

I'm hitting the brakes on my weight.  The question is how often should I assess how I am doing?  I vote for weekly.

Bad news for smoothie lovers...

Posted by Charles Waisbren on June 04, 2016 at 2:41 PM

Bad news for you smoothie lovers.... You are just taking in a pile of calories in liquid form... A calorie is a calorie, regardless of whether it is liquefied or not. I suppose that if your smoothie consists just of vegetables that it could be low caloric. However, if it consists of a variety of fruits, you might as well be having a breakfast burrito.... (with hash browns....)

No need to fast before your cholesterol test

Posted by Charles Waisbren on June 01, 2016 at 12:51 PM

Should you fast before a cholesterol test? I find that some of you get a bit cranky if indeed you are fasting before your cholesterol assessment..... Studies now show that it isn't really necessary to have a cholesterol test on an empty stomach. I am relieved by this finding..... It will make it easier to have a pleasant physician/patient visit.

Let's not forget the real meaning of Memorial Day

Posted by Charles Waisbren on May 28, 2016 at 7:15 PM

Memorial day weekend is indeed fantastic! Three days off from the grind of work, maybe some fishing, a big barbecue with friends and family, watching a blockbuster movie, sleeping in...... However, we should not forget the meaning of memorial day. Let us all in our own way give thanks to the men and women who have and are presently serving our country. We do owe them all much gratitude.

Time to get the motorcycle out..

Posted by Charles Waisbren on May 21, 2016 at 4:26 PM

Motorcycles are fun and fuel efficient. That’s not news to anyone who’s ridden one. But neither is the fact that they’re also way more dangerous than a car. The cold reality is that motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to die in a crash than people in a car.
The numbers are even scarier for older riders, (present company included) who are increasingly taking up or returning to motorcycling after many years. Because of slower reflexes, weaker eyesight, more brittle bones, and other disadvantages, riders over 60 years old are three times more likely to be hospitalized after a crash than younger ones.  Read this link to brush up about motorcycle safety.
