Posted by Charles Waisbren on August 06, 2016 at 11:05 AM

Frequently, I hear peri-menopausal patients lament about hot flashes. Some medications work to alleviate this vaso-motor instability but many don't want to take prescription drugs to help with all that sweating.... New studies show that vigorous, aerobic exercise helps the body adjust its thermostat to the changes associated with menopause.

UFC: Protect your head

Posted by Charles Waisbren on July 24, 2016 at 9:15 AM

Pre-fight physical for UFC star (and Milwaukee native) Anthony "Showtime" Pettis. Watch him on Fight Night against Charles Oliveira on August 27. I instructed him to be careful and to be particularly protective of his head.....

Is it safe to consume foods past the "sell by" date?

Posted by Charles Waisbren on July 20, 2016 at 1:04 PM

New topic: Is the "best used by" .... date really a food safety issue? No. A more accurate assessment of food freshness is your nose or your taste buds. None-the-less, I think that I will still follow the dates on the packaging. It is just too gross to sniff to see if the milk has gone bad...

Keeping Lost Weight Off

Posted by Charles Waisbren on July 17, 2016 at 9:04 AM

Well, my diet is done. My wife is complaining that I am too obsessive/compulsive about it (true) and that I have no fat in my face (true). Now the hard part: keeping the weight off. I will have to think of a strategy..... as I am now having a doughnut for breakfast.

No alcohol on the "Waisbren Diet"

Posted by Charles Waisbren on July 13, 2016 at 2:30 PM

Vodka is only 80 calories an ounce....(...but who only drinks one ounce). Plus, alcohol stimulates the appetite. Consequently, there is NO alcohol on the "Waisbren" diet...

The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Posted by Charles Waisbren on July 09, 2016 at 11:08 AM

Intermittent fasting decreases insulin levels and increases human growth hormone and adrenaline concentrations. This combination increases your metabolic rate and facilitates fat burning. I go from Tuesday night to Wednesday night without eating. It really isn't too hard to do if you keep busy and I indeed think that it facilitates weight loss in us oldsters....

Fruit is part of the problem....

Posted by Charles Waisbren on July 06, 2016 at 12:07 PM

Bad news! Fruit is not "the perfect snack". It is high in fructose which spikes your sugar counts; it is hard to digest and hence causes bloating; it triggers the hormone ghrelin which stimulates your appetite; it isn't particularly low in calories.... The "Waisbren Diet" has no fruit...

Oh, that Belly Fat....

Posted by Charles Waisbren on July 02, 2016 at 8:08 AM

BELLY FAT: I am vigorously dieting and losing weight. However, my belly and chest aren't exactly a six pack. Keys to developing that buffed look to get rid of the visceral fat: Diet/Exercise/Sleep/Stress reduction.... I think that it might be futile. The following article disagrees...

Could gluten impact your joints?

Posted by Charles Waisbren on June 29, 2016 at 12:25 PM

I am not a big "gluten" hater. I am quite skeptical about all the people who avoid gluten. HOWEVER, I am now on day 24 of my diet and I have totally avoided all carbohydrates (and hence in effect have been gluten free). To my amazement, my joints feel much better. I don't require a morning bath to "loosen up" and I don't ache nearly as much. Could there be something to the gluten/arthritis theory?
