Belly fat: Just can't cut it off!

Posted by Charles Waisbren on March 20, 2016 at 9:04 AM

Belly fat: If only we could just cut it off. Research now shows that exercise is more effective than diet in targeting our midriff. However, sit ups, against popular belief, don't target this area. Go aerobic. It is the most effective way to lose our middle.

Turning 62 years old

Posted by Charles Waisbren on March 12, 2016 at 8:12 AM

This week I turn 62

But all is not bad

My kids are getting married

For which I am glad

My knees do indeed ache

And my eyes can’t see near

But I have many friends and patients

Who I hold very dear

I go to sleep by ten

My hair is quite gray

But my life is all good

So I’ll enjoy my birthday

Stay healthy while traveling

Posted by Charles Waisbren on March 09, 2016 at 12:42 PM

Well, I am "traveling the globe" with my wife (Palm Springs, California) to watch the Indian Wells ATP tennis tournament. Read the following article about staying healthy while traveling the globe. I think that it offers some excellent advice, especially if you are really traveling the globe.

For your health, it is important to dress well

Posted by Charles Waisbren on March 06, 2016 at 8:33 AM

Dressing well positively affects all areas of your life.  It gives you a feeling of well being and vitality.  It enhances endorphin release and likely enhances adrenaline.  Put those old T shirts away......  It is time to shine....

Out with small talk!

Posted by Charles Waisbren on March 02, 2016 at 12:49 PM

Big trouble. It looks like people are happier with deep, engaging conversation rather than blabbing small talk. Does that mean I have to read the front page of the newspaper BEFORE the sports pages?

A hot bath is good medicine

Posted by Charles Waisbren on February 27, 2016 at 12:21 PM

For sure, read this linked article. I have been a huge proponent of baths forever. When my kids were sick or cranky, I would always pop them in the bath. For headaches, neck and back pain, sinus pain, respiratory tract infections and just plain old irritability, I have always recommended a hot bath. Who wants to stand in a shower when they are tired and achy? Bubble up. Light some candles. You can even pour yourself a glass of wine or scotch.

Congratulations Jules!

Posted by Charles Waisbren on February 24, 2016 at 4:21 PM

Congratulations to my daughter, Julie, who gave such a wonderful talk at Northwestern Hospital on glycogen storage diseases to the entire staff. Julie is finishing her last year of training in internal medicine at Northwestern and will be working as a hospitalist at the University of Wisconsin Medical Center next year. Hopefully, entering my practice in a year or two is on the horizon....

Health benefits of dancing. Is it worth it?

Posted by Charles Waisbren on February 21, 2016 at 8:07 AM

Indeed, there are many health benefits in dancing. It is reasonable exercise, good for your balance, helps mood and might even help control your weight. Plus, don’t overlook the social benefits: Dancing is a great way to spend quality time with a partner or meet new people if you don’t have a partner. Good luck...... I think that I'd rather be ice fishing.

Ice fishing safety clues....

Posted by Charles Waisbren on February 17, 2016 at 2:52 PM

Ice fishing? Remember, there is no such thing as safe ice! Ice is tricky. Just because a lake or stream is frozen doesn't mean that the ice is safe. Ice fishing requires at least four inches of clear, solid ice and a snowmobile five inches. Cars and light trucks require 10-12-inches in ice thickness. (Please forward this message to those Lake Geneva folks) Also, never park near cracks or pressure ridges. KNOW HOW TO HANDLE AN EMERGENCY. Should the ice begin to crack, run like mad!

The agony of shopping

Posted by Charles Waisbren on February 14, 2016 at 9:43 AM

SHOPPING LEGS:  Why can we walk or run for miles outside but are ready to have our legs chopped off after one aisle of shopping? Some say that it is due to shallow breathing and hence less oxygen going to the legs. I'm not sure about the scientific evidence behind this explanation.
