How not to get sick from air travel

Traveling on an airplane is hazardous to your health. You can decrease your chances of getting sick from air travel by choosing a window seat and avoiding the plane's bathrooms. Better yet, just stay home: Milwaukee-a great place on a great lake.

Should the dog be in the bed?

My wife complains bitterly about the dog in the bed. This study confirms that both the dog and the human sleep just fine together. (My wife indeed doesn't kick the dog out of the bed.....)

Are You Contagious?

Beware: People with colds are contagious for 3 days; Flu sufferers are contagious for 5-7 days. Duration of illness is a better indicator of contagiousness than the severity of symptoms. The best defense against getting a cold or the flu is to avoid these "Typhoid Marys".... Don't be rude but STAY CLEAR....

Sugar is OUT in my household.  (Wife's rule)  We'll see if it helps our waistline.

Winter and inadequate vitamin D levels

Vitamin D levels do plummet in the winter for people living in our "sunshine" state. Hence, in the winter months, we either need to eat more foods which are high in vitamin D, take a Vitamin D supplement or plan a warm weather vacation. I recommend the later.

Learning from our parents' heart health mistakes....

It is not complicated: To decrease the risk of heart disease, we need to stop smoking, get our cholesterol levels under control, maintain a normal blood pressure and avoid diabetes by keeping our weight within normal range. Then all we would need to worry about is our genetics......

Making it through the winter.....

My tip for making it through the winter is to delude yourself. Start to think that once we make it through January that we are on the "home stretch" towards spring. It doesn't really work...... This article has other ideas...


Avoiding getting ill from your sick household....

When colds and flu are in your home, buckle up! There indeed is a good chance you might be next in line. Decrease your chances of this happening by frequent hand washing, avoiding close contact with the infected and the usual: plenty of sleep, exercise, stress avoidance and good nutrition.

A STRONG immune system can ward off colds and the flu. To keep your body's defense system effective, you need to get plenty of sleep, eat healthy, exercise, don't smoke and eliminate stress. Simple enough......
